John Amatt
John Amatt climbed to fame for the first ever ascent of Europe’s highest and steepest mountain face – the 5,000 foot “Vertical Mile” Troll Wall in Norway. He was a leader and principal organizer of Canada’s first successful climb to the summit of Mount Everest, an ascent in which four climbers died in two tragic accidents before six of the team were able to reach the top of the world.
A native of Great Britain, for the past 40 years he has been a resident of the Canadian Rocky Mountains and is the Founding Director of the Banff Mountain Film Festival, widely recognized as the world’s premiere showcase of adventure documentary films. Now in its 38 successful year, award-winning films from this Festival tour the world, screening in hundreds of locations including at the South Pole scientific base in Antarctica.
