Verna van Schaik

Verna van_Schaik_profile

In 2004, South African Verna van Schaik broke her cave diving record of 186 meters, finally achieving the all-time depth record and making a place in the Guinness Book of Records for the Deepest Woman on Scuba. Her dive to 221 m (725ft) took over five and a half hours and at the time, placed her in the top ten deepest divers in the world

Verna started diving in 1989 and was part of Nuno Gomes’ (the men’s world record holder) world record team for a number of his prep dives. Verna was also the Surface Marshall on Dave Shaw’s ill-fated dive. Her world record was the start of a new journey, to understand what it was she did, so she could show other people how to choose their limits and bring their seemingly impossible dreams into reality.
